Thursday's Three on Art

Fall always promises festivals in the arts. Here are just three, in three different sections of the country, to consider:

Roseland Fine Arts and Crafts Festival, October 19-20 ~ Held at Roseland Cottage, Woodstock, Connecticut, the 31st annual festival will showcase 175 juried artisans working in wood, ceramics, metal, and other media. Roseland Cottage is a National Historic Landmark on the former Henry Bowen estate, which features the oldest surviving indoor bowling alley in the country (images here). First-floor tours of the mansion are offered during the festival.

DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts, November 23-24 ~ Presented this year by Museum of Florida Art, Sands Theater Center, and Mainstreet DeLand Association, DeLand, Florida's festival is now in its 21st season. More than 180 juried artists, including painters, sculptors, glass artists, photographers, printmakers, ceramists, and fiber artists, will be on hand to display and sell their work in the city's historic downtown. Cash awards, including top prizes of Best of Show ($4,000), 2D Judge's Choice ($2,500), and 3D Judge's Choice ($2,500), will be presented. Jazz and other musical events and hands-on workshops, performances, and exhibits for youth will be among the festival's scheduled activities. Annually, the festival brings in more than 50,000 visitors.

Tempe Fall Festival of the Arts, December 6-8 ~ If you're on the Right Coast, head west for this year's 45th three-day arts festival in the Mill Avenue District of Tempe, Arizona. The festival draws hundreds of artists from all over North America who must be juried in to show their work to the more than 225,000 visitors expected to crowd the booths for wearable art, jewelry, ceramics, photography, or hand-made objects in 16 categories. This fall's featured artist is printmaker Stephen Harmston.
